Soroa
The small village of Soroa is located 90 km from Havana, in the Sierra del Rosario, declared a Biosphere Reserve. It will take you approximately 1 hour by road to reach this little paradise. The cool and humid climate has favored the development of lush vegetation. The region is home to numerous endemic species, including the famous Tocororo, the national bird of Cuba.
Shared taxis, departing from Havana to Viñales, do not stop in Soroa, so you will need to take a private taxi to make a stop there. For our excursions, we collaborate with professional taxis. Feel free to contact us for more information.
You should plan on spending a good 3 hours to visit the three activities mentioned below.
The Orchid Garden
A botanical garden featuring an extensive collection of orchids and various plants.
On-site, you’ll find a small bar where you can refresh yourself while enjoying excellent natural juices.
Cascada Soroa
A small concrete path and a few stairs in the forest will lead you to a beautiful waterfall measuring 22 meters in height. At the base of the waterfall, small natural pools have formed, providing the opportunity for a refreshing swim. (Photos taken in the dry season, April, showed a significantly reduced flow of the waterfall).
The stairs can be quite strenuous, but the landscape is well worth the effort.
The Viewpoint
A 2 km hike through the lush vegetation in the mountains will take you to the viewpoint, from where you’ll have a breathtaking view of the surroundings. Allow about an hour for the round trip (timing depends on walking pace).
Soroa is a recommended destination for birdwatching.
